Best Bowfishing Bow for 2018 Tips and Reviews by PickaBow .com

Are you looking for the best bowfishing bow? Let’s see what bowfishing is first. A fishing application utilizing special archery equipment, bow fishing helps bowhunters improve their archery skills while extending the territory of bow hunting. Serving as a means to extend the hunting season, archery fishing or bowfishing requires a perfect combination or archery, fishing and hunting skills in order to capture prey that is by no means easy but is also fun and exciting to hunt for and makes a wonderful trophy for the avid bow angler.

The Prey

The bowfisher will have plenty of freshwater species to angle for and these include the grass carp, common carp, alligator gar, catfish, paddlefish, tilapia, bowfin and bighead carp. For saltwater bowfishing, barracuda, flounder, redfish sharks and rays are common target species.

The Equipment
Largely similar to spearfishing, bowfishing employs pointed weapons in place of hooks to bait the fish. Both methods are done while standing on a boat or in shallow water. The difference lies in the actual fishing weapon used, since bowfishing uses a bow to drive the arrow to the target. You can bowfish in the night or during the day.

The bowfishing arrow has greater strength and heft compared to a typical or standard archery arrow. Able to travel through the denseness of water and still pierce the target, a bowhunting arrow is made of heavier weight fiberglass, even solid aluminum, fiberglass reinforced with carbon fiber, or pure carbon fiber, so it really won’t travel too far. The fletching or feathers characteristic of archery arrows is noticeably absent, since the bowfishing arrow doesn’t need any element that will only divert its movement in the water, unlike the fletching in archery arrows that propel them to the target. Barbs on the arrowheads are useful for capturing the fish and keeping it stuck to the arrow. The line from the reel is tied to the arrow via a type of slide mechanism that can prevent snapback or bird’s nest.

bowfishing_equipment

The line used in bowfishing can be made of braided nylon, Spectra or Dacron. Line weight ratings range between 80 to 400 pound test, while 600 pound test line weights are employed for bowhunting alligators. The line can be in different colors, typically neon orange, white or lime green.

For bowfishing, one can choose among retriever, spincast and hand wrap reels. The simplest among the three types, a hand-wrap reel comprises a circular spool around which the line is manually wrapped and then secured in a slot that holds the line. A retriever reel holds the line in place via a ‘bottle’. A spincast reel is the perfect choice for bowfishers with advanced skills, since it offers greater speed and higher precision.

Optional bowfishing equipment include: polarized sunglasses for easy sighting of the target in water in glaringly bright sunlight; rubber hip waders that keep the angler dry when fishing in shallow water or from the shore; gloves to keep the hands protected; a flat bottomed boat with a quiet motor and rails; good quality light for night fishing.

Bowfishing Techniques

If the bowfisher doesn’t really care about getting soaked, they can wade and shoot instead of fishing from the shore or on a boat. This allows the angler to get as close to the target as possible and utilize good bowfishing skills. Another means to bowfish is by standing on large rocks along shallow sections of a river, which is effective in herding the fish to a second bow angler on standby while wading in the water.

Since the fish you see on the surface is just a refracted image of the actual fish in the water, it is best to aim low and then aim even lower.

Best Bowfishing Bow Reviews

1. Cajun Bowfishing Sucker Punch Review – Best Bowfishing Bow

CajunBowfishing Sucker PunchDeveloped from the ground up with the extremes of bowfishing in mind, the Cajun Bowfishing Sucker Punch has an axle-to-axle length of 32.25 inches with a brace height of 7.25 inches and a peak draw weight of 50 pounds. The unit features two interchangeable draw modules, a draw specific module and a constant draw module with 60 percent let-off, both providing draw length adjustments from 17 to 31 inches. The Sucker Punch is also equipped with deep cam grooves that prevent derailed strings while on the water, and also enable problem-free transport and carrying. Available in a bow only or a ready-to-fish package, this bow is made for the serious bow angler.

The ready-to-fish package comes with a Fishing Biscuit Arrow Rest, Cajun Blister Buster Finger Pads, Cajun Hybrid Bowfishing reel, and two white fiberglass arrows with piranha tips to provide the most complete and effective bowfishing kit on the market. This bow allows you to bowfish comfortably without causing finger pinch. Lightweight at only 3.2 pounds, the Sucker Punch is engineered to stick and whip big fish, whether it be carp or alligator gar. This is truly the best bowfishing bow for anglers who want value for money without compromising on reliable perfo

rmance and consistent power deliver

How to choose the right Bow fishing Bow for you

The bow used in this sport has a simple design, with most models not equipped with sights (useless really for refraction and depth) since aiming is purely done through line-of-sight snap decision down the arrow. Two types of rests can be selected from namely, roller and hook rests. Bowfishing bows also feature little to zero let-off and low draw weight. Those elements are determined primarily by preference or what the weapon itself is engineered with.

Bow anglers can select from traditional bows, which come in either recurve or longbow configuration. Compound bows are a modern weapon that employ a system of pulleys to make shooting more effortless for the archer. These types of bows come with as high as 120 pounds or 50 kgs draw weight.

Like compound bows, recurve bows are small yet offer a remarkable amount of force to drive an arrow while taking up little space in your fishing boat.

Summary

Bowfishing has long been used as a means of gathering food for generations, and the fact that it has become a method of recreational fishing only drives the fascination notch higher for this kind of activity. Targeting ‘rough’ or bottom-feeding fish, bowfishing may not exactly be what purists who prefer the standard rod-and-reel configuration find worthy of spending time on. This is despite the fact that bowfishers regularly take home plenty of rough fish after just a short time in the water.

Bowfishing regulates the ecology of any given area, a means of controlling the invasive or alien fish species that tend to compete with the space and resources used by the more desired or prized fish populations, thus bringing balance to the ecosystem.

Becoming increasingly popular among fishermen and hunters alike, bowfishing is definitely here to stay. Get yourself the best bowfishing bow you can afford and meet me at the lake!

Best Telescopic Fishing Rod Reviews 2018 Fishing By johnlewis

Best Telescopic Fishing Rod Reviews 2018

When it comes to fishing, surely every angler will be aiming to have a great fishing rod, for it is the star of the show after all. And plus, how will you even catch fish without one? With those troublesome fishing nets? yeah i didn’t think so. Now, if you are an angler who is keen on travelling to different fishing spots to catch different breeds of fish, a telescopic fishing rod is just what you need.

Continue reading on below to find out which are the best ones. Also, you may want to check out our previous articles on fishing gear like our reviews for the best baitcasting reel or the best fish finders.

Before that, here are a few of the criteria that need to be considered when choosing the best telescopic fishing rod :

Weight

As usual, this will be the criteria that will either make or break a product. Telescopic fishing rods are meant to be lightweight and easy on the angler, thus one that is bulky and heavy will simply not make the cut. Keep in mind that a fishing pole is something that you will be having at hand at all times, most especially when you are wrestling with that huge fish, thus you would not want it to wear you out and ultimately lose the battle.

And while some may say that an equally heavy fishing rod is necessary to battle with huge fishes, I beg to differ. The lightweight ones can be just as sturdy and durable without the added load. It’s all about the performance and capacity of this fishing gear.

Durability

Telescopic fishing rods are typically made of the same materials as conventional fishing rods such as graphite, carbon and sometimes fiberglass or even composites of this materials. However, since fishing will involve exposure to either saltwater or freshwater, it will be wiser to opt for a product that is made out of stainless steel or aluminium alloy.

These materials are far more resilient and will ensure that your fishing rod does not rust and stays intact for a long time. They also lend a more sleek, professional feel to the overall design of the rod, thus not only is it durable, but attractive to the eye as well. A win-win situation for sure.

Budget

There are a range of prices out on the market, thus it depends on what you are looking for really. If you are willing to spend a little more, then you may choose to so do. However, if you are a beginner or an amateur who just recently picked up fishing as a hobby, you may want to go for a basic product that is affordably priced, considering that some of you may be teenagers and will have to get permission from your parents to purchase the desired telescopic fishing rod.

Thus, if it comes at a price that is friendly to the wallet, you are on your way to owning that fishing rod.

Convenience

If you did not already know, telescopic fishing gears are popular among those whom like to travel because of it’s collapsible feature thus it extremely convenient to travel with. No more having to find a monstrous bag that will be able to fit your fishing rod or standard size bag with a fishing rod that juts out awkwardly at an angle. With this, you will be able to fit it into any bag, anywhere.

Which makes things extremely convenient as that can save space and you will have more room leftover for other fishing gear. Thus, be sure to look closely at the collapsible design of the fishing pole.

Other elements included

Most manufacturing brands include other features as well on the fishing rod, thus as a consumer you are surely getting your money’s worth. However, just because it is free, doesn’t mean it is up to standard and functional. Most products come with fishing line (check out our reviews on  the best monofilament line or the best braided line), spool and even cases, so you will definitely have to note just how good all those extra elements are.

For example, if the telescopic rod is great, but the spool is very average in performance, then that may start to limit the number of fish you catch, as overall everything is not exactly working in sync. Thus, be sure that the added elements are of good quality as well.

  1. Weight is rated accordingly.
  2. Durability is rated from very bad to very good.
  3. Budget is rated accordingly.
  4. Convenience is rated from very bad to very good.
  5. Other elements included is rated accordingly.

In terms of convenience, the rod also has a nice balance to it and the tip has decent sensitivity. Telescopic poles typically lose their strength quickly but this one seems fairly sturdy and has non-slip grips.

Also, the pole extends and collapses smoothly without any hesitation and overall performs well. As for the other elements included, it comes with a reel and an aluminium spool. The reel is made of high quality metal and ABS composite plastic . The 5:2:1 gear ratio and 13+1 ball bearing design is great to handle and plus, the reel functions smoothly and has a nice drag system.

kastking-rod for fishing

This telescopic fishing rod is slightly on the heavier side due to it’s metal construction. However, it is not heavy to the point where you feel overpowered and strained after a period of use. In terms of durability, this item takes the trophy for extreme durability.

KastKing Speed Demon Casting Reel Review

Kast King Speed Demon Fishing Reel Review

The high price of gear is one of, if not the biggest barrier to entry to the bass fishing world. Now don’t get me wrong; I’m crazy about some of the high-end fishing tackle out there, but for someone just getting started or a weekend angler looking to add a few new combos to his lineup, it can be really darn tough to find good gear at a bargain. I’ve said it many times before: I have an immense appreciation for companies who find a way to get more people involved in fishing.

You may have heard of KastKing before, but never really knew any buddies who had ’em and were hesitant to give them a shot. They’re an up-and-coming company, however, and they’re starting to put out some pretty impressive reels at jaw-dropping price points. I’ve had an opportunity to test the KastKing Speed Demon, which is billed as “the world’s fastest baitcaster” for the last few months, and I have sincerely been pleasantly surprised at what I’ve learned.

I’ll take you through my thoughts in the next few slides.

3 Best Fish Recipes With Pasta

3 Best Fish Recipes With Pasta

Fish is a low-fat food that is high in protein and provides a wide range of health benefits. It is also the go-to choice for people that want a balanced diet. If you’re of fan of pasta and you’re looking for tasty and accessible recipes, we have you covered.

You should make sure you have your favorite fishing tackle box by your side because your family will soon want more of these tasty dishes.

Spicy pasta with fish

We will start our list with a dish that only takes 11 minutes to prepare, and it is the perfect meal for families that love spicy fish recipes. The ingredients list is quite small. You only need 12 oz. of rigatoni, 1 clove of garlic, 3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, ½ pounds of grouper fillet, 1 pound of canned tomatoes, 1 pinch of salt, and hot chili papers to your taste.

The first step is to take a sharp knife and skin the fish fillet carefully enough not to cut yourself. Then, chop them into small cubes. You can now cook the pasta using a large pot with the amount of salted water that the pasta manufacturer specifies on the box.

While the pasta cooks, you can prepare the sauce. Smash the garlic using the flat side of a knife and peel to remove the green center and then chop it carefully. Heat some oil in a pan first; then add the garlic and some chopped chili pepper. Cook for around 30 seconds, so that the garlic does not brown.

You can now add the chopped fish, and stir with a wooden spoon while you season the fish with a pinch of salt. You should add the diced tomatoes when the fish has browned evenly on all sides. Stir it and let it cook for a couple of minutes, the time during which you can adjust the salt if you feel necessary.

Once the pasta is done cooking, it is time to drain it and add the contents of the pot right into the pan with the tomato sauce. Shake the pan over high heat for around a minute while you toss the pasta with the sauce. The dish should now be ready for you to serve it. You will get 4 servings when using the ingredients listed above.

Pasta with White Fish, Tomatoes, and Zucchini

Many fish pasta recipes use cream to make the pasta dish scrumptious, but with this healthy recipe, there is no need for heavy cream when you have fresh and flavorful Mediterranean vegetables. The dish might seem a bit sophisticated when looking at it on the plate, but trust us when we say that you will have no problems cooking it all by yourself.

Before we go step by step, we will take a look at the ingredients to ensure that you have everything you need at the ready. For the vegetables, you will need 2 zucchini (sliced into 1/2–inch round pieces), 8 ounces of cherry tomatoes, and fresh parsley for garnish.

You will also need 2 tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil, 12 ounces of white fish (swordfish, mahi-mahi or halibut), ½ cup of white wine or vegetable broth, salt to your taste, ½ teaspoon of black pepper, and 12 ounces of whole grain pasta such as spaghetti, penne, or linguine.

First, you should boil the pasta by following the steps present on the box. Meanwhile, get a large saucepan and put it over a medium-low heat and add 1 tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil to sauté the garlic for 1 minute. You can now add the zucchini in the saucepan and leave it until they are toasted.

Once cooked, you can transfer the zucchini to another plate and leave it aside. In the same saucepan, you need to add the remaining tablespoon of oil and sear the fish until it is cooked through. You should leave it for about 5-7 minutes on each side.

In the saucepan with the fish, add the tomatoes and toss them for about five minutes. When the tomatoes are done, add the zucchini back and pour in the white wine and wait for the sauce to thicken slightly. Season with some salt and pepper.

When the pasta is cooked, you can add it to the saucepan with the fish and mix well for one minute. Sprinkle the pasta with parsley and drizzle with a little extra-virgin olive oil. Using the amounts listed above you should get around 6 servings.

Creamy

Pasta with White Fish, Tomatoes, and Zucchini

Many fish pasta recipes use cream to make the pasta dish scrumptious, but with this healthy recipe, there is no need for heavy cream when you have fresh and flavorful Mediterranean vegetables. When the pasta is cooked, you can add it to the saucepan with the fish and mix well for one minute. Sprinkle the pasta with parsley and drizzle with a little extra-virgin olive oil. Using the amounts listed above you should get around 6 servings.

Creamy pasta with salmon

For the final recipe on our list, we’ve saved a dish that is the ideal midweek supper. The creamy sauce and the tasty salmon are made even more appetizing by a sprinkle of fresh parsley. It is a straightforward dish, and it is the perfect choice if you want a light and quick meal without stressing yourself with unnecessarily complicated recipes.

For 4 servings you will need around 12 ounces of pasta, 3 tablespoons of olive oil, 2 chopped garlic cloves, 2 sliced onions, 3 skinned and cubed fresh salmon fillets (approximately 5 ½ ounces each), 4 fluid ounces of double cream, 3 tablespoons of chopped fresh parsley, and black pepper and salt.

First, you need to cook the pasta in a pan of salted boiling water using the instruction noted on the box and drain them when finished. While the pasta is cooking, take a frying pan to heat the oil and add the garlic and red onion in the pan. Fry for about 3 to 4 minutes until the onion slices have softened.

You can then add the salmon cubes and the double cream to the garlic and onion. Continue to cook over a gentle heat until the salmon has cooked through (this should not take more than 5 minutes).

Finally, you can stir in the drained pasta and season each helping with salt and pepper. You then sprinkle over the parsley, and the dish is ready to be served.
